Media report – website Yek.Dem
January 27, 2026
The city of Aleppo in general suffered from the clashes that took place in the period from January 6-10, between the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) – the Autonomous Adminitsration of the Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods and the forces of the Transitional Authority “the Syrian Arab Army”, which attacked from several axes with all kinds of weapons in a severe manner, and brought tanks, armored vehicles, and thousands of soldiers into the city, taking complete control of them.
The city was paralyzed, and was filled with terror and anxiety, as significant material damage occurred in residential buildings, shops, public facilities, infrastructure, hospitals, cars, etc. To date, the official authorities have not revealed the extent of human and material losses within the Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods, which are many times what occurred in other neighborhoods.

= Dead and wounded victims:
Al-Jamaheer newspaper quoted the media office of the Health Directorate in Aleppo on 10/1/2026 that the total number of civilian casualties inside the city is (23 deaths, 104 injuries), while the directorate did not count those that occurred in the Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods, and did not reveal the numbers and identities of the bodies that were piled up in Khaled Fajr Hospital in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood, and what their fate was. A media source reported that the Forensic Medicine Center in Aleppo buried some bodies due to the lack of a large morgue for those who came to it from the two neighborhoods. It documented the information, and they were buried in the Al-Naqrin area, east of Aleppo. Some residents received the bodies of their sons and transported them to their villages. According to a medical source from Khaled Fajr Hospital, the number of wounded exceeded 150 and the number of victims exceeded 100 civilians from both neighborhoods who arrived at the hospital, including women and children. = Corpse mutilation:
Soldiers from the Transitional Authority forces – documented video – threw the body of the Kurdish martyr fighter Zainab Kurdli daughter of Amin and Amina (Deniz Jia) – Afrin – from the second floor of a building in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood, and mutilated it, amid cheers and takbirs.

Other soldiers dragged the body of a Kurdish fighter – video documented – down the stairs of a floor building in the Ashrafieh neighborhood, hurling insults and threats.

Similar to the practices of the former regime, the Public Security in Azaz – northern countryside of Aleppo, numbered the bodies of the two martyrs, “Muhammad Imad Bahri Jammu and Joan Walid Turko/Muhammad”, before handing them over to their families.

= Arbitrary Arrests and enforced disappearance:
As civilians, most of them from the Afrin region, were leaving, especially after the two neighborhoods were taken over, hundreds of them, men, women, minors and members of the Kurdish Red Crescent, were arrested randomly and arbitrarily, and transferred to several detention centers. Dozens of Kurdish citizens were also arrested upon their arrival at their villages in Afrin or upon passing through checkpoints. Some of them were released, and the fate of another group remains unknown, as they were taken in queues and in groups, under beating, humiliating treatment, and insults, curses and threats directed at them, according to the testimonies of the residents and what is clear in videos published by members of the Transitional Authority forces themselves.
It was difficult for families to know the fate of their missing children, whether they were detainees or lost their lives during the clashes, amid the absence of any official information about the detainees‘ places of detention or the legal reasons for their continued detention.

= Property targeting:
As a result of the intense fire directed at the two neighborhoods, the intensity of the clashes, the occasional direct targeting, and the entry of armored vehicles between residential buildings, hundreds of homes, some schools and mosques, and dozens of vehicles were severely damaged. The same applies to Othman Hospital in the Ashrafieh neighborhood and Khaled Fajr Hospital in Sheikh Maqsoud, both of which have been completely out of service. Some public facilities were included on the military zone maps published by the Palestinian Authority forces.
Electricity, landline telephone, Internet and drinking water networks have also been severely damaged.

It is noteworthy that Khaled Fajr Hospital, which was under self-adminitsration, provided its services at symbolic prices. It was severely damaged, and most of its staff were forced to flee. Its situation deteriorated as a result of the bomson ofg of its surroundings and interior at times, and the interruption of supplies. It was also crowded with the wounded and bodies of the victims, and some families took refuge there. After taking control of the neighborhood, the Civil Defense (White Helmets) and Syrian Red Crescent teams transferred the bodies to forensic medicine and the remaining wounded to government hospitals, without revealing their numbers.

= Deteriorating humanitarian situation:
Due to the previous siege of the two neighborhoods, and due to the sudden start of the attack on the first day, and the closure of all roads leading to them, the humanitarian situation deteriorated sharply, as terror prevailed over civilians, and all public and service facilities, shops, etc. were closed, and more than 150,000 people were forced to flee on the second and third days through humanitarian corridors, without being able to transport their basic needs, and tens of thousands remained in their homes under danger.

While a large portion of the displaced returned to their homes, another portion was subjected to forced migration, property thefts occurred, and hundreds lost their jobs.
= Turkish participation:
This is not the first time that the Turkish army has participated alongside Syrian militias against the Kurds and their defensive forces. Turkish drones have been seen reconnaissance and bombing alongside the Syrian Arab Army against the two neighborhoods, as well as with armored vehicles, artillery, field command rooms, and intelligence work, in light of the declared Turkish support for the transitional authority, which was preceded and accompanied by provocative media hostile to the Kurdish presence.
Four pro-Turkish army personnel stood in front of the door of a warehouse at the Shaqayf site in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood, trampling on flags of Kurdish forces and raising the badge of the extremits Turkish gray wolves.

= Takbeerat:
Coinciding with the attack on the two neighborhoods, and at the request of the Endowments Directorate, the muezzins of the mosques in the city of Aleppo chanted takbirs and calls for “victory” with this “clear conquest, ” just as Turkey did by reciting Surat Al-Fath in about 90 thousand mosques during the aggression on the Afrin region under the name “Operation Olive Branch” in the first quarter of 2018 AD, in the context of exploiting religion to achieve political and military agendas, in parallel with hate speech and the use of racits descriptions of the Kurds as “separatitss, terroritss, Atheitss, pigs, infidels. ”
= Background:
With the autonomous adminitsration remaining in the two neighborhoods shortly after the fall of the Assad regime, cases of exchange of fire were repeated, until an agreement was signed between the civilian council of the two neighborhoods and the committee assigned by the Presidency of the Republic on April 1, 2025, so the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) left them and the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) remained; However, in light of the faltering implementation of the March 10, 2025 agreement signed between President Ahmed Al-Sharaa and General Mazloum Abdi, Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces, what remained regarding the two neighborhoods was not implemented, but rather Asayish members were targeted several times, and widespread clashes broke out between them and the Transitional Authority forces twice, the first on 10/6/2025, and the second on 12/22/2025, which stopped with dialogue and communication.
On January 6, 2026, Al-Asayish said in the morning: “The Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood was subjected to several targets by armed factions affiliated with the Interim Minitsry of Defense, which resulted in the martyrdom of one citizen and the injury of two others, and also caused significant damage to property. ” It responded by targeting two points affiliated with those armed factions. At around 2:00 PM, the Transitional Authority forces began launching a large-scale attack, until they entered the Ashrafieh neighborhood on the evening of 1/8/2026. Some Asayish forces were stationed in the middle of the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood and resitsed until the morning of 1/10/2026. The battles stopped after the martyrdom of their leader, Ziad Halab/Ziad Qaddour son of Zaeem, born in 1988 in the village of Avrazeh – Maabatli ditsrict/Afrin.

It is noteworthy that after the end of the battles on 10/1/2026, two drones were seen in the skies of Aleppo, one of which collided with the municipal palace building – Aleppo governor, and the second occurred at the former military police/military security headquarters, and the SDF was accused of launching it, in an attempt to accuse it of targeting public facilities, in the context of justifying new attacks on it to the east, noting that the SDF was present in the town of Deir Hafer, 52 km east of Aleppo city.
In the general context, the Syrian presidency abruptly halted negotiations with the SDF delegation at the Republican Palace on January 4, 2026, after a significant period of talks had passed. On January 5, 2026, understandings were signed between the Syrian delegation, headed by Foreign Minitser Asaad al-Shaibani, and an Israeli delegation, under American supervision and in the presence of the Turkish Foreign Minitser, in the French capital, Paris. The following day, attacks were launched on both neighborhoods.
What happened in the two neighborhoods during the recent war violates the agreements signed between the Transitional Authority and the Autonomous Adminitsration, the principle of dialogue to resolve national issues, and the violations and war crimes committed, as well as serious violations of international humanitarian law.
