Statement
Arabic to English Translation*
On the night of Wednesday, June 18, 2025, an armed group opened fire on “Mustafa Jamil Hameed Sheikho, a 16-year-old minor” from the village of “Haj Hassna” – Jenderes, resulting in his death at dawn the following day. He succumbed to severe injuries after being transported to the Syrian Specialized Hospital in Afrin.
At the time of the incident, “Mustafa” was with his family in a farmland owned by his father, located west of “Haj Hassna, ” near the village of “Sanoreh”– Shiyeh/Sheikh al-Hadid, which lies within the area controlled by the militia known as the “Sultan Suleiman Shah Division – al-Amshat. “While Mustafa, his father, and his uncle attempted to prevent the theft of solar energy equipment and chase off the intruders, he was deliberately shot by the assailants. The field had previously been targeted by repeated thefts.
This heinous crime comes amid the ongoing violations and atrocities committed in the Afrin region by militias affiliated with the so-called “Syrian National Army” and allied settlers, who have been present in the region since the beginning of the Turkish occupation in 2018, and who continue to operate military and security outposts with impunity.
We strongly condemn and denounce this crime. It further reinforces our assertion that the continued presence of militias and settlers in Afrin poses a serious threat to the lives and property of its indigenous population, and prevents the establishment of law, order, and a safe environment for a dignified life. We hold the General Security Directorate accountable and call upon it to investigate the circumstances of the killing, pursue the perpetrators, and ensure that justice is served.
